Measuring Width
The pole or track should be fitted 15cm above your window top, with 15cm to 20cm excess either side of the window recess.
Measure the total width of the pole or track excluding finials.
Account for overlap
This is an additional measurement, normally 2.5cm, which allows the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.
Measuring Drop
Take the measurement from the bottom of the pole rings, or top of the track (bottom for a wave curtain), to your desired drop length. If you’re using eyelets, measure from the top of the pole & add 3cm.
- Sill length: 1cm above the sill.
- Below sill length: 15cm below the sill.
- Full length: 1.5cm from the floor.

What are linen fabrics made from?
Linens are natural woven fabrics made from Flax which is grown in colder European climates.
What is linen made from?
Linen is a natural fibre made from the stalks of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). The fibres are harvested, separated, spun into yarn, and woven into fabric — a process that's more labour-intensive than producing many other textiles, which is part of what gives linen its distinctive character.
What makes linen a good choice for curtains and blinds?
Linen has a natural weight and beautiful drape that makes it hang elegantly, whether in flowing curtains or crisp roman blind folds. Its slightly textured, organic look brings a relaxed, timeless quality to a room that synthetic fabrics struggle to replicate, which is why it's a favourite for both modern and traditional interiors.
Do linen curtains let light through?
Unlined linen has a lovely semi-sheer quality that filters daylight into a soft, diffused glow — ideal for living rooms and spaces where you want brightness without harsh glare. If you need more privacy or want to block light, linen takes lining and blackout backing well while keeping its natural appearance from the room side.
Why do my linen curtains wrinkle, and is that a problem?
Linen fibres have little natural elasticity, so they crease easily — this gives the fabric its characteristic relaxed look. For curtains and roman blinds, gentle creasing usually settles and softens as the fabric hangs under its own weight. Steaming on the hung curtain is the easiest way to relax any stubborn folds.
How do I clean linen curtains and roman blinds?
For most linen window treatments, dry cleaning is the safest option, as washing can cause shrinkage and affect any lining. If your linen is labelled washable and unlined, a cool gentle wash may be possible — but be aware it can change the size and finish. Regular light vacuuming with an upholstery attachment keeps dust down between deeper cleans.
Will linen curtains shrink?
Linen can shrink, especially if washed in warm water, which is a particular concern for made-to-measure curtains and blinds where exact dimensions matter. This is why dry cleaning is widely recommended for finished window treatments, and why reputable makers often pre-shrink the fabric before sewing.
